2010 Las Vegas Open: Weightlifting Meet

The Las Vegas Open: A Weightlifting Tradition Since 2002.

The Las Vegas Open began at Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, founded by former Olympic Training Hall resident, World Team member, and American Record Holder, Val Balison. What started as a small, local meet quickly expanded, attracting lifters from across the country. Now held annually at Average Broz’s Gymnasium, the event has evolved into a premier competition that caters to both seasoned lifters and newcomers alike. With two distinct divisions, the Las Vegas Open offers a unique experience for every participant, regardless of their level of experience

Division 1: Non-USAW Members – Open to All

The first weightlifting meet division is for non-USAW members. Whether you’re a CrossFit athlete or just someone wanting to lift without joining a federation or worrying about singlets, this is your division. All that’s required is a pair of shorts that reveal the knees and a short-sleeved T-shirt. There are no qualifying totals or minimum standards, meaning anyone, at any level, can take part. The lifts follow IWF rules, and the weight categories are based on IWF Open/Junior classes, offering a solid challenge for anyone who steps up to the barbell.

Division 2: USAW Members – Official Rankings and National Qualification

The second division? That’s for USAW members. Here, everything adheres to IWF Competition Rules. Totals are official, used for qualifying for national events, and they contribute to lifters’ rankings on the USAW website.

Typical Session Breakdown

Typically, there are four sessions. Morning sessions are for those with lower entry totals, while the heavier hitters take the stage later in the day, making for an exciting afternoon of competition.

The Las Vegas Experience: Lifting Meets Entertainment

But what makes the Las Vegas Open truly unique is its vibe. Lifters from all over the country show up, some even registering on the morning of the event—often after a long night out in Las Vegas. It’s part of the fun, part of the unpredictability that makes this meet stand out. Whether you’re here to push your limits or just to be part of the experience, the Las Vegas Open never disappoints.
